UK Government open to further sanctions against Roman Abramovich

The situation around the Chelsea owner is escalating.

  • Roman Abramovich could be targeted for further sanctions, a UK Foreign Office minister has revealed.
  • Earlier, the Chelsea owner was called out by Russian opposition activist Alexey Navalny as one of the key beneficiaries of Vladimir Putin’s allegedly kleptocratic regime.
  • Now, there are calls in the UK Parliament to freeze Abramovich’s assets in the country, which supposedly would include his stake at Chelsea.
  • In 2018, he was already rejected Tier 1 investor visa after which he has been unable to live in the UK and, as a consequence, visit Stamford Bridge.
  • A spokesperson for Abramovich has claimed that there is no basis for such allegations – but a lot will depend on how serious the UK Government are in their stand against Russia.
