KNUST Development students distribute sanitary pads, register pupils on NHIS in Adaklu

News Desk Report:

As part of Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy, (SEaP) component of their Msc Development Management programme, a group of students known as ACHIEVERS, from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have completed the distribution of reusable sanitary pads and NHIS enrollment activities at three basic schools in Adaklu District of the Volta Region, on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

The schools are, Adaklu Vodze Basic School, Adaklu Dzakpo Basic School and Sustained Hope Academy.

The Achievers Group distributed reusable sanitary pads to about 100 girls and registered and renewed health insurance for over 150 pupils.

The Achievers’s project is targeted at addressing the Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Access to sanitary pads is essential for promoting good health and well-being, particularly for women and girls.

Lack of access to sanitary pads can lead to various health issues, including infections and discomfort during menstruation. Additionally, inadequate menstrual hygiene management can contribute to absenteeism from school or work, hindering educational and economic opportunities for women and girls.

The health insurance component is to provide financial risk protection by helping individuals and families mitigate the costs associated with healthcare services, including medical treatments, medications, and hospitalization.

Three health professionals who accompanied the group, educated pupils on the use of the menstrual pads, personal hygiene, and do’s and don’ts of girls who have experienced menstruation.

The Adaklu District office of the National Health Insurance Scheme renewed cards, registered new pupils and provided instant cards to them.

The headmaster of Vodze Basic School, Mr. Edward Dzidzah, Teachers and pupils thanked the Achievers Group for the support.

Achievers was supported by National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Ghana Health Service (GHS), Village Exchange Ghana, Azieti Foundation, Comfort Children Ministry Inc. (CCM) and ENE Empower. Mr. Kofi Nyalimba represented the ENE Empower.

The health professionals were, Gloria Emefa Agyekum, Mavis Amedzorku and Charity Avukpor.

Members of the Achievers Group were; Reinhold Quarshie, Confidence Coffie, Confidence Dominic Bedzina, Rustum Gameli Senorgbe and Afful Maame Efua Helena.

To conclude the project, the Achievers Group is expected to do presentation alongside other group of students at the 7th Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy conference slated for Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the IDL, Amonoo Neizer Conference Centre, on the theme: Inspiring Active Citizenship; The role of the Development Manager at KNUST, Kumasi.
