Volta Regional Minister Urges DVLA to Crack Down on Underage Riders

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, has called on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to address the growing concern of minors operating commercial tricycles, contrary to licensing regulations.

He made this appeal during the 2024 mid-year review of the DVLA at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho.

While commending the DVLA for expanding its offices in the Volta Region to enhance accessibility, Dr. Letsa emphasized the need for stricter enforcement to ensure only licensed drivers operate vehicles.

The 4-day review conference, attended by about 100 participants from DVLA offices across the country, aimed to assess the authority’s activities over the past year and plan for future initiatives.

Chief Executive Kwasi Agyeman Busia highlighted the authority’s achievements, including technological advancements and staff capacity building, which have earned them numerous awards as a exemplary public institution.

He also revealed that the DVLA has expanded its operational footprint with the construction of new offices in seven locations: Axim, Tarkwa, Techiman, Wenchi, Effiduase, Kumawu, and Akatsi. Additionally, existing facilities in Takoradi, Cape Coast, and Koforidua have been renovated and commissioned, further enhancing the authority’s presence and service delivery across the region.

According to Frank Davies, Chairman of the DVLA Board, the authority has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a global leader in service delivery. A testament to this achievement is the unprecedented processing time of just 30 minutes for new driver licenses, setting a new standard for efficiency and excellence.

Deputy Minister for Transport, Hon. Frederick Obeng Adom, set the tone for the review conference by stressing the importance of Ghana’s thriving automobile manufacturing industry and the DVLA’s vital role in its growth. He emphasized that the licensing authority must augment its capabilities to effectively support innovation and play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future.
