Grassroots Momentum Builds Behind Dr. Akwesi Opong-Fosu for NDC Flagbearer Bid

Ashaiman-based NDC activist Alexander Floran Amati(Mawutor), has sparked a wave of political conversation following a heartfelt appeal on Asaasepa FM, urging Hon. Dr. Akwesi Opong-Fosu to contest for the National Democratic Congress(NDC) flagbearership ahead of the 2028 elections.

Speaking passionately on air, Alexander described Dr. Opong-Fosu as a rare blend of vision, discipline, and integrity. These are qualities he believes are needed in the party and reconnect with its grassroots base.

“We need someone who understands the grassroots, has served at the highest levels of government, and still commands the respect of ordinary citizens,” Alexander said.

Dr. Opong-Fosu, a former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under the first Mahama administration, currently chairs the board of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC). He is widely respected for his technocratic leadership style and his commitment to decentralization, public service reform, and inclusive development.

Alexander’s call comes at a time when the NDC is undergoing internal reflection following its recent electoral performance. While President John Mahama remains a prominent figure, there is a growing interest in choosing a very good successor that reflects the party’s founding principles of social justice and equity.

Political observers note that Dr. Opong-Fosu’s clean image and administrative depth make him a compelling candidate for those seeking a shift from personality-driven politics to policy-focused leadership. His name being floated as a potential flagbearer suggests a rising appetite for generational and ideological renewal within the party.

During the interview, Alexander emphasized that the NDC must prioritize leaders who have a proven track record of service and who resonate with both the intellectual elite and the grassroots. “Dr. Opong-Fosu is a unifier and a visionary — that’s what we need for 2028,” he said.

Although Dr. Opong-Fosu has not publicly declared any political ambitions, insiders suggest he remains committed to his role at the GIPC, where he continues to champion regional investment and sustainable partnerships. Still, the grassroots momentum behind him could influence future decisions.

As the party looks ahead to 2028, voices like Alexander’s remind Ghana that transformative leadership often begins with the people and that the path to political revival may lie in the hands of those who have long served quietly, but effectively.
