Ghana Calls for Climate Accountability and Debt Relief

Hon. Seidu Issifu, Ghana’s Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, during the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) at the 80th United Nations General Assembly has delivered a message, on the topic Climate accountability must move from the rhetoric to remedy; emphasizing the need for climate accountability and debt relief for vulnerable nations.
Speaking on behalf of the President of Ghana, Hon. Issifu outlined a bold framework for collective action, prioritizing adaptation, debt justice, and health resilience.


On adaptation, the minister explained Scaled-up finance, community-driven resilience, and technology partnerships are crucial for vulnerable nations.
He again explained the Debt Justice: Ghana is calling for an institutionalized Climate Debt Forgiveness Mechanism to redirect resources toward climate action.
Hon. Issifu’s Health Resilience point is Integrating health resilience into adaptation efforts is essential, with urgent investments in climate-resilient health systems and disease surveillance.


Hon. Issifu’s statement offers a blueprint for vulnerable nations to leverage momentum and advance climate action. The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and other coalitions can, Institutionalize climate accountability, Build regional alliances, Drive South-South leadership, and Link climate and health agendas.


The high-level dialogue was supported by prominent speakers, including H.E. Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, and H.E. Mohamed Nasheed, Secretary-General of the CVF Secretariat.


Ghana’s intervention serves as an inspiration for vulnerable nations to build alliances, design effective policies, and demand accountability from the global system. The question with climate vulnerability transforming into climate leadership anchored in action, justice, and resilience.
