Ghana’s National Ambulance Service, operations, resources and the future

In January 2020, the government of Ghana commissioned 307 ambulances under “One Constituency, One Ambulance” initiative to all 275 constituencies and other important state institutions.

The Volta Regional office of the ambulance service had no functional ambulance at the time.

According to Henry Xorlali Mawugbe, the Deputy Regional Commander, the distribution was timely to transfer a patient from the Ho Teaching Hospital to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital a day after the regional handing over.

In this report, Henry tells us more about the operations of the service, the four new advanced equipment in the ambulances, maintenance and standard practice, working condition of staff and what the state can do more to have an efficient ambulance service in the healthcare delivery system.

By 2030, countries like Ghana must work to half the number of global deaths and injuries from road accidents, end preventable deaths of newborns as captured in Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

And the provision of a robust ambulance service is critical. The Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is a co chair of SDGs.
