African Games 2023: Sporting Facilities for 13th African Games to be used for School and National Games

The 13th African games came to a close on Saturday, 23rd March, 2023 in a colorful ceremony after three weeks of thrilling sporting activities involving 54 nations.

In a closing speech, the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that the facilities used for the games will be used as nucleus for university of sports for Development.

“The facilities will act as the nucleus to soon-to-be established University of Sports for Development and will also be the venues to be holding of the Ghana National Games, that’s an annual festival where winners from regional levels will meet to compete for national honours” he said.

In order to have facilities to host the games, the government of Ghana built Borteyman sports complex at the cost little over $145 million.

The Complex has 1,000 seater competition swimming pool, that is a 10-lane competition swimming pool; an 8-lane warm-up swimming pool; a 1,000 seater multi-purpose sports hall which was used for basketball, badminton, boxing, table tennis and weightlifting during the African Games and also a 500 seater temporary used dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate and taekwondo.

The rest are a five tennis court complex, including a 1000 seater centre court; a 6-lane warm-up athletics track; one FIFA standard football training field.

The government also completed the Legon stadium for track and field events such as Athletics, High Jump, long jump and many more.

In addition to the two facilities, renovation and equipping the following facilities were carried out at Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, Achimota Cricket Oval and Bukom Boxing Arena.

The Local Organizing Committee for the 13th African Games have been assigned to develop plans and maintain the Sporting facilities for University of Sports for Development.
