Ghana Champions Climate Action, Seeks Permanent Seat on CVF-V20 Board

By: Christian Sowada

Ghana has made a significant push for a permanent leadership role within the global climate community, proposing it be granted a permanent seat on the board of the Climate Vulnerable Forum and V20 Finance Ministers (CVF-V20). The proposal was made during the organization’s inaugural board meeting in Washington on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

Representing Ghana, the Hon. Issifu Seidu, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, argued that hosting the CVF headquarters makes a permanent seat a logical step, citing global precedents for similar arrangements. The board agreed to the proposal in principle, pending a broader endorsement from the entire CVF-V20 community to ensure transparency.

Advancing Ghana’s Climate Prosperity Plan
Minister Seidu, in his address, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to climate and economic resilience. Appointed by H.E. President John Mahama as the nation’s first Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu outlined several key national priorities:
1. Renewable Energy: A major push to finance 500 megawatts of new solar capacity.
2. Strategic Updates: Revising Ghana’s Climate Prosperity Plan (CPP) to align with current fiscal realities.
3. International Cooperation: Building on recent productive talks in Beijing focused on trade and economic partnership.

Minister Seidu said, “Ghana is actively updating its Climate Prosperity Plan.”
He further stated, “We are eager to collaborate with partners to align our national strategies with tangible investment opportunities.”

About the CVF-V20 Alliance
The CVF-V20 is a crucial alliance of countries disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. It functions as a South-South cooperation platform, enabling vulnerable nations to advocate for stronger climate action and build resilient economies.

The group’s core mission is to achieve “climate prosperity” by scaling up adaptation measures, improving access to financing for loss and damage, and securing fundamental resources like water, food, and energy for their populations. Ghana’s proactive role and proposal for a permanent board seat underscore its dedication to steering this vital international effort.
