News desk report

The Anlo Traditional Council has cancelled the 2021 Hogbetsotso Festival as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement signed by Togbi Zewu IV, Chairman of Local Planning Committee says “the Local Planning Committee has taken note of the current pandemic situation and its underlying strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. It will therefore be most difficult to check attendees during the festival, especially during the durbar day when thousands of revelers and tourists are expected to congregate at one place at Anloga” . However organisers are optimistic of celebrating the festival in 2022.

Hogbetsotso is a festival celebrated by the people of the Anlo, in the Volta region of Ghana. It is a festival celebrated in memory of their journey from their origin to their present-day location. The name of the festival is derived from the ewe language and it translates simply as the festival of exodus.
