President Mahama Cancels Fuel Allowances for Appointees in Bold Cost-Cutting Move

Accra, July 15, 2025 — In a decisive effort to curb government expenditure, President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees across the country.

The directive, which takes effect immediately, is part of a broader austerity plan aimed at redirecting public funds toward priority sectors of the economy. According to a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, the move reflects the President’s belief that leadership must share in the sacrifices being asked of the Ghanaian people.

“This measure follows sweeping reductions in the size of government,” the statement read, citing a cutback in the number of ministers and presidential staffers as additional components of the reform. The presidency has also halted satellite TV subscriptions for government offices as part of the cost-trimming initiatives.

The announcement signals a shift toward fiscal prudence, as the government seeks to improve efficiency and accountability in the use of public resources.
