A dedicated activist group within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), NDC Grassroots Voices, has officially endorsed former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, to contest as the party’s next National Chairman.
The group, which champions inclusivity, fair resource distribution, and the mass mobilization of the party’s base, described the endorsement as a historic step toward rescuing ordinary party workers from perpetual neglect.
According to a press statement released by the group, the decision to back Hon. Opong-Fosu follows a thorough assessment of his recent media appearances, most notably his interview on TALK TIME with veteran journalist Comrade Kwesi Pratt Jnr.
The group expressed deep frustration with the party’s current reward structure, stating that the loyal base of the NDC has historically carried the heaviest burden during campaigns, only to be sidelined once victory is secured.
”Hon. Opong-Fosu’s message marks a refreshing departure from this unsustainable norm,” the statement read. “We wholeheartedly align with his vision, which includes building systems over personalities and the restoration of party cohesion.”
The NDC Grassroots Voices emphasized that Hon. Opong-Fosu is uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between the party’s national leadership and its rank-and-file, pointing to his extensive 18-year career in local governance.
His key career highlights include:
Longest-Serving DCE: Recognized as the longest-serving District Chief Executive (DCE) in Ghana’s history.
Local Administration Pioneer: Served as PNDC District Secretary/DCE and Head of the Local Government Service.
National Leadership: Former President of the National Association of Local Authorities in Ghana (NALAG).
Legislative & Executive Experience: Served as a Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of State for Local Government and Rural Development.
The group argues that this extensive background at the local level gives him an unmatched understanding of the daily struggles, pain, and aspirations of the average party activist.
While Hon. Opong-Fosu has yet to make a formal declaration, the group noted that he is currently conducting wide-ranging consultations across the country.
NDC Grassroots Voices has pledged to launch a “vigorous, nationwide campaign” to secure his election as National Chairman the moment his candidacy is made official.
They concluded with a passionate appeal to NDC delegates ahead of the party’s upcoming internal elections:
”We call on every single delegate who is tired of being forgotten after elections to reject politics as usual, protect their dignity, and vote for systematic change.”
